Many homeowners are installing low-emissive windows, also known as low-E windows, in their houses these days. Low-E windows can limit the amount of heat transfer that takes place within windows, which can keep homes more comfortable throughout the year.
However, there is a strange problem that’s plaguing some people who live near those who have chosen to install low-E windows in their homes.
There are more and more people who have sustained warped vinyl siding on their homes in recent months as a result of their neighbor’s low-E windows or their own. There is still a lot of research being done on why exactly this seems to be taking place. But all indications are that some low-E windows are taking the sunlight that hits them and bouncing it back in the direction of vinyl siding. The heat that is caused when this happens can rise as high as 200 degrees, which appears to be causing some vinyl siding to melt and warp since most vinyl siding is only designed to withstand heat up to about 165 degrees.
At this time, both low-E window manufacturers and vinyl siding makers are staying quiet as to why the windows are causing so many problems for those with vinyl siding. But some window experts have recommended ways in which to stop low-E windows from melting vinyl siding. One suggestion is to place window screens over windows to prevent them from reflecting sunlight onto nearby homes. Another suggestion is to block the sun from accessing low-E windows altogether by placing awnings over them. Experts have also thrown out the idea of homeowners installing heat-resistant siding if their siding is damaged due to this phenomenon, even though it could cost upwards of three times what regular siding does.
